Rock Rose

Dunnet Bay Distillery wanted to explore new packaging ideas for their product to increase shelf appeal and the gift market.

Looking to their location as key inspiration we wanted to bring the unique elements of the distillery to their customers. A personal touch that echoes the hand finished nature and effort that goes into making their product. Building on the iconic ceramic bottle we wanted to bring in the coastal influences that make Rock Rose.

If we were going to put the bottle in an outer gift package we didn’t want to lose the feeling of the original. It had to be tactile, true to the brand while adding something new to the brand experience.

Cask edition

Rock Rose wanted to release a limited cask edition and asked us to develop a way to distinguish them from the original Gin and Vodka. Using a different wood to represent each of the cask flavours we developed a thin veneer wrap to replicate the original barrels. Each is closed with a hand wrapped leather thong and button closure. We branded each bottle box with laser engraving to keep the natural finish.

The Elements

To support the brand we developed a range of gift items that could be sold with the product to expand the brand experience. We worked with a local potter to develop tasting tumblers for use in the distillery tours and in the gift shop. Replicating the colours and textures of the sea and coastline. A metal die was created to brand the pottery and to seal the wax on the bottles as each bottle is hand dipped in-house by a member of the team.

As an optional packing features we enclosed the bottle tops in hessian squares to replicate the traditional barrels bungs, bottle openers crafted from driftwood would allow visitors to take a bit of Dunnet Bay home.

Finding new ways to engage with your audience gives a brand the opportunity to explore different ideas. Concept work plays as big a role as the finished product. Working through a variety of ideas often gives birth to different sparks of inspiration, finding the perfect solution for the current design challenge.
